Essay

The quote stated by Barbara Tuchman, “Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent; literature is dumb, science, thought and speculation at a standstill” means that’s you need books in every aspect of life whether its history, science, etc and without books you wouldn’t learn anything. In the book HIT THE ROAD by Caroline B. Cooney it relates to Tuchman’s quote.
In the book HIT THE ROAD by Caroline B. Cooney, Brittany an inexperienced driver who only had her driver’s license for 11 days is forced to driver her grandmother and her friends to a 65th college reunion. Nanny couldn’t drive herself to the reunion because a couple weeks prior to this event Brittney’s mother took her car away and she ripped up her driver’s license because she was getting too old to drive. So when Brittney’s parents dropped her off at nanny’s for the week while they were away on vacation she was forced to drive nanny and her friends to the reunion cause she wasn’t going to risk her grandmother to drive so they both went on adventurous road trip.
After the two pick up grandmother’s friend Flo, all three of them tried to kidnap another one of their college roommates Aurelia, from a nursing home which her crazy son Aston has committed her. On their way to to Maine to the reunion Brittney got an unexpected phone call from a boy named Cooper that she had a crush on but they were having a conflict for six months and they were distant from each other. At first Brittney was annoyed for having to drive her elderly passengers but once she got behind the wheel and they were all in the car they were all having laughs and talking about their six decades of friendship. Brit was determined to do whatever it takes to get them to their reunion.
The message this novel was trying to make is even if you are in the situation you aren’t really comfortable in it might turn out better then you thought you expected it. Brit was put on the spot to get these girls to their reunion and even if she wasn’t experienced at driving she still had to do it anyway and it turned out for the best because they all had a fun and laughable road trip and they got to their reunion safely and Brittney was glad that she got to do it.
I think this novel was interesting and how Brittney was put on the spot like that it was very brave of her to take the risk like that to driver her grandmother on the highway because on the highway if you are inexperienced at driving it is very dangerous and she was willing to do it for her grandmother and her friends. This novel could reflect life by any person could be put in a situation like this, maybe not the same exact one but similar to one like this and you might have to drive somewhere you aren’t very comfortable driving but it would be better for you to drive then maybe your grandmother or grandfather or someone that is elderly and not a very good of a driver anymore. So it is safer for you to take the risk of driving then them because you would be a less risk of getting hurt then they would.
